Temperature can be measured in a wide variety of applications – from the core temperature of a food product to surfaces in industrial processes to the continuous monitoring of storage or production rooms.
Depending on the measurement task, different measuring instruments are used. In addition to classic contact thermometers, non-contact infrared thermometers or data loggers for long-term monitoring are also used. The following sections provide an overview of typical device types and their areas of application.
Contact thermometers measure temperature through direct contact between the sensor and the measurement object. This allows precise measured values to be determined in liquids, solids or air.
Depending on the probe type, they are used, for example, for core temperatures in food, temperature measurements in liquids or for checking room air conditions. Different designs – such as penetration, immersion or air probes – allow adaptation to the respective measurement task.
Contact thermometers are used when particularly accurate measured values are required or when the temperature inside a medium needs to be determined. Typical applications are core temperature measurements in food, measurements in liquids or precise measurements in technical systems.
Infrared thermometers measure temperature without contact. They detect the thermal radiation emitted by the object and use it to calculate the surface temperature.
This measurement method is particularly suitable for hot, moving or hard-to-reach measurement points. In many cases, it enables rapid assessment of components, machines or electrical systems.
