Temperature is a very important measurand in industry, science and research. High precision is essential, which requires the use of infrared thermometers (also known as pyrometers) or thermal imaging cameras.

Temperature measurement with the pyrometer

The pyrometer is an ideal and versatile temperature measuring device. The parameters of emissivity and distance or measuring spot must be taken into account. For the safe use of pyrometers, Testo includes an emissivity table in every device, which can be used to quickly set the emissivity. The distance to the measurement object also plays a role: to ensure accuracy, the measuring end must be far enough away so that the entire size of the measuring spot is on the measurement object. The further away you stand from the object to be measured, the larger the measuring spot will be.

It is also important to choose the right pyrometer. You should ask yourself in advance what you need such a temperature measuring device for. Is it sufficient to measure the surface temperature or is it necessary to determine the core temperature as well? In the latter case, a combined pyrometer-insertion thermometer is the right choice. It also matters whether the data is to be transferred to a mobile device. Smart probes offer the option of transmitting the measurement data from the respective measuring device to the Testo Smart app - either as a diagram or in tabular form.

Infrared thermometer: Precise measurement at a distance

Pyrometers are used for point measurements using infrared. This allows temperatures of surfaces to be determined without contact. In many cases, it is important to determine individual temperature spots and use them to determine whether an object has heated up or cooled down. Even measurements in hard-to-reach places or distant measuring points are no problem.

Laser thermometer: Pyrometer for the toughest applications

Temperature measuring strips are not used in all areas of everyday life or in trade and industry. The application of the strips is quite simple: they are simply stuck onto the object to be measured and change color depending on the influence of the surface temperature.
