Temperature measurement in practice

Temperature measurement is not an end in itself. It serves to safeguard quality, safety and process stability. Depending on the industry, the measurement task, permissible tolerances and documentation requirements differ considerably.

In food monitoring, the focus is on HACCP-compliant controls, core temperature checks and seamless monitoring of the cold chain. In industry, the aim is reproducible surface and process temperatures for quality assurance. In building technology, temperature measurements support the assessment of system condition and energy efficiency. In regulated areas such as pharma and laboratory, validation, documentation and traceability are particularly important.

The choice of the right measurement strategy therefore always depends on the specific application.

What questions are crucial before a temperature measurement?

  • What is being measured – surface, air or core temperature?

  • Where does the measurement take place – in the process, in storage or in the system?

  • How often must measurements be taken – spot check or continuous monitoring?

  • What evidence is required – documentation, audit or standard specifications?

The following application areas show typical measurement tasks and suitable measurement methods.

Food – cold chain, storage, transport

In the food industry, temperature monitoring is safety-critical. From goods receipt inspection through production monitoring to storage, defined limit values must be reliably maintained.

Particularly important is core temperature measurement. It shows the actual thermal state of a food product – for example during cooking processes, spot checks or as part of HACCP concepts. Surface measurements alone often do not provide sufficient information about the product temperature.

In addition to spot measurements, continuous monitoring of refrigeration and storage temperatures plays a central role in reliably documenting cold chains.

Temperature monitoring in the food industry

Pharma & laboratory

In pharmaceutical production areas and laboratory environments, particularly high requirements apply to accuracy, documentation and traceability. Temperature measurements are frequently part of validated processes and must be documented in an audit-ready manner.

Typical applications include monitoring production rooms, refrigeration units, incubators or storage rooms for sensitive materials. In addition to spot measurements, continuous temperature monitoring with monitoring systems is frequently used.
